The best New Relic alternatives, compared honestly
New Relic is still one of the strongest observability platforms on the market: 100 GB of free ingest a month is the most generous free tier in the category, and the 2026 releases added an SRE Agent, MCP support and the Knowledge intelligence layer. The problem is the seat model. Standard is capped at five full platform users, so the sixth engineer who needs APM moves the whole organisation to Pro at $349 per user, turning a $406 monthly bill into $2,094. New Relic did not get worse at observability; it was a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for the 13th consecutive time in 2025 and shipped agentic incident tooling through 2026. The five-seat ceiling
The Standard edition is capped at five full platform users: $10 for the first, $99 for each of the next four. There is no sixth seat to buy. Growing past five means everyone moves to Pro at $349 per user annually, so one hire adds roughly $1,688 a month, about $20,000 a year.
Three meters, each on its own curve
Seats, ingested data and compute are billed separately: $0.40/GB above the free 100 GB, $0.60/GB on Data Plus, and Advanced Compute at $0.606 per capacity unit. Forecasting means modelling three curves at once, which is why estimates and invoices drift apart.
EU accounts pay a 15% multiplier
The usage plan is explicit: if your account is in the EU data region, multiply the list price by 1.15. The EU Data Center add-on costs a further $0.05/GB ingested. European teams therefore pay more for the same platform, and there is still no self-hosted option to fall back on.
Retention is a separate line
The free tier keeps at least 8 days. Longer history is an add-on at $0.05/GB per extra 30 days, with Live Archives at $0.007 per GB month. Incident forensics across quarters is priced per gigabyte you already paid to ingest.
NRQL does not travel
Dashboards, alert conditions and service levels are written in New Relic's own query language. Nothing converts them to PromQL, LogQL or SQL, so the real migration cost is rewriting queries rather than moving data. The flip side is genuine: New Relic ingests OTLP natively, so instrumentation itself is portable.
Sampling to protect the invoice
The common workaround is to sample traces down to a few percent, which quietly undoes the reason you bought tracing. In research published by SigNoz, a competitor, an engineering director interviewed in August 2025 described paying $1,000 a month while ingesting only 10% of their traces.

Pro starts at a $19 monthly platform fee, metrics from $6.50 per 1k series, logs and traces at $0.050/GB to process plus $0.400/GB to write, and $8.00 per active Grafana user. OpenTelemetry and Prometheus are first-class, and Loki, Tempo, Mimir and Grafana itself are AGPLv3, so you can move the same dashboards onto your own hardware later. Weakness: it is the one pick here that still bills per user, the LGTM stack takes real time to learn, and Enterprise sits behind a $25,000 annual spend commitment.
Traces, logs and metrics in one OpenTelemetry-native product, which makes it the closest thing to a drop-in for a New Relic APM workflow. Cloud is $0.30/GB for logs and traces and $0.10 per million metric samples, on a $49 monthly base that already includes about 163 GB or 490 million samples, with retention from 15 days to 13 months and unlimited teammates and hosts. The core is MIT, with the ee/ and cmd/enterprise/ directories under a separate licence, so self-hosting is a genuine option. Weakness: a much smaller integration catalogue than New Relic, and the enterprise cloud tier starts at $4,000 a month.
The broadest product surface in the category and the one most likely to already have an integration for whatever you run. Infrastructure Pro is $15 per host per month, APM $31 per host, logs around $0.10/GB to ingest plus indexing that lands nearer $2.80/GB blended, on a free tier of 5 hosts with 1-day retention. Seats are not the meter here, which is exactly what makes it attractive to a team of 20 engineers. Weakness: you pay per host and per module, OpenTelemetry metrics can land in the custom-metric bucket, and Datadog is the vendor teams most often name when an invoice arrives at multiples of the estimate.
Consumption-priced with no seat fees at all: Full-Stack Monitoring at $0.01 per memory-GiB-hour, which is roughly $58 a month for an 8 GiB host, Infrastructure Monitoring at $0.04 per host-hour or about $29 a month, log and trace ingest at $0.20/GiB, and RUM at $0.00225 per session. Davis, its causal AI engine, does root-cause analysis that genuinely reduces triage time on big estates. Weakness: the highest per-host price on this list, and a multi-axis consumption model that needs someone watching it monthly.
Built for asking unplanned questions of production: arbitrary-cardinality attributes, fast iteration on traces, and unlimited seats on every plan, which is the direct answer to a per-seat platform. Free covers 20 million events and 100 million metric data points a month; Pro starts at $150 a month for up to 750 million events. Weakness: events rather than hosts is an unfamiliar unit to budget, and it is deliberately tracing-first rather than a full infrastructure and synthetics suite, so it usually replaces part of New Relic rather than all of it.
If your bill is dominated by log volume, this is the cheapest credible landing spot: serverless Logs Essentials from $0.07/GB ingested with retention from $0.017 per GB month, the Complete tier from $0.09/GB, and no per-seat charge anywhere. Elasticsearch and Kibana added AGPLv3 as a licence option on 29 August 2024, so the self-managed path is OSI open source again and the search experience is the best in this list. Weakness: you tune and operate more of it than a SaaS APM, support tiers cost 5 to 15% of consumption, and the serverless price sheet has a lot of axes.
The pragmatic pick when what you actually need is logs, dashboards, status pages and a pager rather than distributed tracing. Free covers 3 GB of logs with 3-day retention, 30 GB of metrics, 10 monitors and one status page; telemetry bundles start at $30 a month, and logs cost $0.10/GB to ingest with $0.05 per GB month retained in Europe. Team members with telemetry access are free and only responders cost $34 a month, or $29 billed yearly. Weakness: it is not APM-grade tracing, so a service-mesh performance problem still needs one of the picks above.
The self-run baseline every commercial quote should be compared against: OpenTelemetry and Prometheus are Apache-2.0, Grafana with Loki, Tempo and Mimir is AGPLv3, and the only bill is the infrastructure you already own. It satisfies residency requirements no SaaS plan can, and it is the one option where a pricing change cannot reach you. Weakness: you become on-call for your own observability stack, and long-term metric storage, trace retention and upgrades are permanent engineering work rather than a line item.
Deliberately left out: Chronosphere, Splunk Observability Cloud and IBM Instana are credible platforms that publish no list pricing, so they cannot be compared on the axis this page turns on. When New Relic is still the right choice
Migrating is not free. Instrumentation moves cleanly if you are already on OpenTelemetry, but every NRQL dashboard, alert condition and service level has to be rewritten, and you should expect to run both platforms in parallel for a month before you trust the new alerts. For some teams the arithmetic never justifies that.
New Relic is still right if…
- You have five or fewer engineers who need full platform access. Five Standard seats plus 500 GB a month is $406 plus $160, so roughly $566 for APM, infrastructure, logs, RUM, mobile and synthetics with nothing to operate. That is hard to beat.
- Your traffic is large and your team is small. This is where per-user billing flips into an advantage: volume does not multiply seats, so a two-person team with a busy product pays for gigabytes and almost nothing for people.
- You want one vendor for everything, mobile and AI monitoring included, plus the 2026 agentic tooling such as the SRE Agent and MCP support.
- You have no platform team, and the 100 GB of free monthly ingest already covers most of your volume.
